New Grocery Store Layouts and floor plans- BEWARE

For years we've been told to "shop the perimeter" of grocery stores to buy the healthiest and best foods for our health, and to avoid the isles as they tend to be the most processed and chemical-filled. Most health and nutrition books devote entire sections to grocery shopping and almost all of them recommend "shopping the perimeter" of the grocery store.

Well, given the recent explosion of health related topics in the news and our national obsession with obesity, grocery store marketers are beginning to pay attention and pick up on these things. Have you noticed how many major grocery store retailers are renovating their stores and placing the produce section directly in the middle (right when you walk in)--effectively the center "isle" of the store, bifurcating the store right down the center, or placing it somewhere near the middle of the store. The deli/cheese is usually right behind it so the store ends up looking like a "T", with the processed food isles on either side of the vertical section of the "T".... this is so you HAVE to walk through the isles. Beware of this new tactic. More and more marketers are starting to sell companies on this concept, and we will be seeing this becoming a stronger trend in 2012 and onward.
